Total Hip Replacement

Total Hip Replacement (THR), also known as Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA), is a surgical procedure where the damaged or diseased parts of the hip joint are replaced with artificial components. This procedure is typically performed to relieve pain and improve function in patients with severe hip arthritis or hip injuries that have not responded to conservative treatments.

Procedure Overview
  • Preparation: The patient is anesthetized (either general anesthesia or spinal/epidural anesthesia).
  • Incision: A surgical incision is made over the hip to access the joint.
  • Removal of Damaged Tissue: The damaged cartilage and bone from the hip joint are removed.
  • Implant Placement: The hip socket (acetabulum) is replaced with a metal cup, and a metal or ceramic ball is placed on the upper part of the femur (thighbone).
  • Closure: The incision is closed with sutures or staples, and the hip is bandaged.
Benefits of Total Hip Replacement
  • Pain Relief: Significant reduction or complete elimination of chronic hip pain.
  • Improved Mobility: Restoration of hip function and movement, making daily activities easier.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Increased ability to perform activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and engaging in low-impact sports.
  • Long-Term Results: Modern prosthetics can last 15-20 years or longer with proper care.
  • High Success Rate: Most patients experience substantial improvement in symptoms and quality of life.

Total Hip Replacement is generally recommended when other treatments, such as medication, physical therapy, or less invasive surgeries, have not provided sufficient relief from symptoms. It is important to discuss with an orthopedic surgeon to determine if THR is the right option based on individual circumstances and health conditions.
